Rhône varieties grown in the Walla Walla Valley are a focus of Joshua West, and this presentation of Grenache, backed by Syrah (20%) is fetching and a bit on the darker side. His work with Oct. 5 fruit from Dr. Greg Chan’s vines along Mill Creek Road, one of several acclaimed plantings managed by esteemed viticulturist Kenny Hart, is stellar. The plush nose from 17 months in neutral French oak hints as ripe plum, Bing cherry and Marionberry with earthiness in the background. Inside, it exudes finesse as clove, elderberry and black currant are carried by delicate tannins, leading to a complex finish of white pepper, black cherry and a lick of caramel. Suggested pairings include gamy meats, roasted lamb as well as aged/smoked cheeses. August 2018 will go down as a special month for this College Cellars grad. First, E7 is a part of the Winemaker Picnic and Barrel Auction for the Auction of Washington Wines. And on Friday, Aug. 24, he realizes a dream by opening a tasting room in downtown Walla Walla.
