Gård Vintners 2014 Lawrence Vineyards Malbec, Columbia Valley, $35
The Lawrence family harvested its clone 4 Malbec from Washington’s Royal Slope on Oct. 24, and Aryn Morell again has produced delicious results. It’s a Malbec that may well well appeal to Syrah lovers, too, in that it’s smoky and gamy and loaded with dusty purple fruit akin to blackcurrant and plum. Baking spice and coffee notes from the 19 months in 54% new French oak meld with earthiness and horehound herbs to add remarkable complexity. Firm tannins and cherry acidity combine for a mouthfilling and cellar-worthy wine. Look for these wines at their tasting rooms in Woodinville’s Warehouse District, downtown Walla Walla and along Pearl Street in downtown Ellensburg.
