Icon by Waterbrook 2015 Estate Red, Walla Walla Valley, $34
By Great Northwest Wine on August 4, 2018
The Icon tier for Waterbrook allows John Freeman to focus the young Waterbrook Estate Vineyard near acclaimed Spring Valley planting, and the 2015 Estate Red is a Right Bank Bordeaux-style blend with Merlot leading the Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Cabernet Franc (20%). The use of 40% new barrels makes for notes of toast and baking chocolate, but they don’t cover up the profile of blueberry, elderberry, cherry jam and mint. Pomegranate acidity and a firm grip of tannins makes for a good finish of plum and cherry skins.
