Ledger David Cellars 2015 Tempranillo, Rogue Valley, $35
Domaine Serene-trained Rob Folin spearheaded the red wine program at Ledger David Cellars for this historically hot vintage, and his work for David Traul and Lena Varner mirrors that under his family’s Folin Cellars brand. The Tempranillo planted at Varner-Traul Vineyard near Medford, Ore., was still in its first decade in 2015, and while this bold Spanish red makes its way into two red blends and the Port-style program, it shines in this standalone table wine. Blackberry, plum and cherry cola aromas include thyme, sweet tobacco and Graham cracker. And true to form, it’s mouthfilling and mouthwatering, a blend of black cherry, Western serviceberry and elderberry that’s ideal for tapas.
