Canoe Ridge Vineyard 2015 The Benches Vineyard Limited Edition Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $44
Long Shadows Vintners gave this vineyard its provenance as Wallula Vineyard, which now serves as a backbone for many of Precept Wine’s top efforts. The historically hot 2015 growing season in the Pacific Northwest made for an early finish for many lots, including these five barrels of Cab harvested on Oct. 15. Bill Murray handed these off to Haydn Mouat, and two of the barrels used during the 22 months were new French oak. That was just enough to impart some toast without robbing any of the dusty elegance that Horse Heaven Hills minerality adds to so many projects. Dried herbs and Marionberry jam combine for an approachable theme of purple fruit that rides alongside the fine-grained tannins. Pleasing acidity and slate streak through the finish. Suggested pairings include braised beef, steak and barbecued ribs.
