The Walls Vineyards 2015 Gaspard, Red Mountain $48

The tandem of winemaker Ali Mayfield and corporate attorney Mike Martin rapidly turned The Walls into one of Walla Walla’s young cult producers. And they playfully embrace their proximity to “the walls” surrounding the Washington State Penitentiary. While it’s understandable that Cab gets much of the acclaim, this Syrah provides more evidence that it belongs on Red Mountain. Remarkable aromas of Cherries Jubilee, sugar-frosted plums and blueberry Gummy Bears leads to an entry of blackberry and cocoa powder. Remarkable fleshiness to the tannin structure blends with juiciness for a finish of creamy cherry and sassafras on the finish. It’s easy to fall for this.
