Plaisance Ranch 2015 Papa Joe’s Private Stash Carménère Applegate Valley, $30

Soft-spoken viticulturist/winemaker Joe Ginet continues to grow the audience for his fun and fascinating winery in west of Jacksonville, Ore., that served as his dairy for decades. The wine program goes well beyond his pioneering work in the United States with Mondeuse, as this attractive Carménère proves. There’s the enticing herbal and peppercorn aroma to start, which is joined by blueberry, dried strawberry and dustiness. Inside, there’s richness to the black plum flavors, which are extended by fine-grained tannins, and added to by more herbs and a juicy blend of boysenberry and pomegranate. Enjoy with an estate steak or roast, the organic grass-fed beef that Plaisance Ranch also sells.
