William Marie Wines 2017 Syrah, Columbia Valley, $25

Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills and Double Canyon Vineyard remain the focus of Portland-based winemaker Ed Lefferts, who moved from Arizona in 2010 with his wife to be a part of the Rose City restaurant and wine scene. Their 2017 Syrah comes across as a rather food-friedly, cool-climate example featuring dark purple fruit tones. Bing cherry, blueberry and elderberry aromas are joined by milk chocolate, lime zest and savory notes of squid ink. Nicely managed tannins carry along more blue tones of pomegranate and blueberry. Their wines are available at Portland merchants such as Oregon Wines on Broadway, Portland Wine Bar and Liner & Elsen, and they continue to earn placement at steakhouses such as El Gaucho and the iconic Ringside.
