Richard Funk could have labeled this Syrah under his bargain program known as “The Jack,” as a GSM. It is made up of Syrah (81%), Grenache (10%) and Mourvèdre sourced from nearly a dozen vineyards throughout the Columbia Valley. The list includes stalwarts such as Elephant Mountain, Pepper Bridge and Stillwater Creek. Plums, blackberries and cured meat lace its aromas, then show up as more black and blue plums, blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrant in its jammy mouth feel. A touch of earth and black tea tannins conclude its finish. A grilled ribeye or Beef Bourguignon would pair up nicely. The 2017 vintage signaled the third consecutive year in which Funk’s Syrah program under The Jack brand has earned at least a gold medal at the Cascadia International Wine Competition.
