Barili Cellars 2017 Red’ Ass Red Wine, Columbia Valley $20

For the second straight year and with the second consecutive vintage, Spokane vintners Gary Hustad and Russ Feist spun their Malbec-based proprietary blend into a gold medal at the Cascadia International Wine Competition. Legally, they could have labeled this at Malbec (80%), and they sourced from both Red Mountain and the Royal Slope regions. In contrast to the name of the bottling, the winemaking by Feist and Hustad is sure to calm and sooth the irritations of life. Bright Boysenberry, Rainer cherry, sidewalk chalk and spice aromas lead into lively flavors of red berries, red plum and cherry fruits. Cola, sandalwood and pepper add touches of interest on the palate. The wine is a smooth but zesty party in your mouth and you will soon forget what ailed you. This is a crowd pleaser, so get ready to hide the bottle if you have friends over for a BBQ.
