H/H Estates 2014 Coyote Canyon Vineyard Big John Cab Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $42

Rancher-turned-grower Mike Andrews established Cabernet Sauvignon on his family’s land in 1995, so these vines are reaching peak maturity. His winemaker, Justin Michaud, folded in some Malbec (18%), which adds a youthful and blue note in the background. There’s some maturity reflected in the color as it sits the glass, leading to notes of black cherry, allspice, cola and cedar. Blueberry acidity, plum-skin tannins and dark chocolate make for a terrific mouth feel and structure. This bottling serves as a tribute to a prized bull that topped the Western Nugget National Hereford Show and Sale in 1974. John J. Ascuaga, who owned the Nevada casino, was named Lifetime Cattleman by the Western States Hereford Association in 2006. Ascuaga, class of 1952, received the Washington State University Alumni Achievement Award in 2005. The Andrews enjoy the Big John Cab with what else but grilled steak.
