Rachel Joy continues to put to her chemistry degree from UMass to work in delicious fashion, and she’s made her mark since arriving in Woodinville with Syrah from one of Washington’s most acclaimed sites for the red Rhône grape – Boushey Vineyard. This example focuses on clone 174, which has done well in the Northwest. Aromas of Marionberry, plum and cola pick up hints of cured meat and bacon fat. Its dark colored fluid brings in flavors of blueberry, pomegranate and Montmorency cherry with an enjoyable tannin structure that makes for a great mouth feel and lovely dark finish. Suggested pairings include grilled meats, braised dishes, fish stew and barbecued fare. These wines are available at PCC Community Markets and Salare Restaurant in Seattle.
