Pete’s Mountain Vineyard & Winery 2015 Destiny Ridge Vineyard Elijah’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $38

Mike and Kristy Thayer live on Pete’s Mountain near the Portland suburb of West Linn, and their ridge-top tasting room and vineyard offer some of the best views of Mount Hood in Northwest wine country. The Thayers also have a growing following for their wines, thanks in part to the association with grower/winemaker Jarrod Boyle of Alexandria Nicole Cellars fame in Washington. His Destiny Ridge Vineyard and winemaking talent are reflected in the 2015 Elijah’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a sturdy drink laden with aromas of black cherry, blackberry and earth, then black cherry, blackberry and a touch of pomegranate, with a nip of chocolate at the end with its smooth tannins. Last fall, this received a gold medal at the Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition in Hood River, Ore., a judging staged at the Columbia Gorge Hotel on behalf of some of the region’s top wine buyers.
