Elephant Seven Wine 2017 Yellow Bird Vineyard Grenache, Walla Walla Valley, $30
By Great Northwest Wine on February 15, 2020

Joshua West continues his work with the Chan family’s vineyard at 1,450 feet elevation, overlooking famed Mill Creek Road, a site managed by longtime Dunham Cellars viticulturist Kenny Hart. West’s three barrels of Tablas Creek clone Grenache were picked on Oct. 14, co-fermented with a substantial amount of Syrah (20%) and aged for 17 months in neutral French oak. That treatment allows the fruit to shine as strawberry, cherry jam and black pepper are joined by tannins akin to Baker’s chocolate, a hint of savory, and a food-friendly finish of pomegranate.
