Dana Roberts and his family at Westport Winery near Grays Harbor have dramatically pivoted their tribute to Captain Gray away from Gewürztraminer to Chardonnay. In doing so, they’ve invested in fruit from one of Washington’s top Chardonnay sites — Olsen Estate near Prosser. This lightly oaked example is stunning as tropical tones in the nose lead to lively flavors of Asian pear, dried apricot and starfruit. There’s very little sense of barrel influence, and the nibble of pear skin in the finish conjures up thoughts of the Wild Garlic Grilled Cheese Sandwich or North Shore Garlic Prawns at the on-premise Sea Glass Grill. And despite the switch of grape varieties, a portion of Captain Gray sales still benefits the Grays Harbor Symphony.
