Boomtown by Dusted Valley 2018 Syrah, Columbia Valley, $19

There are five varieties and a red blend under the Boomtown umbrella, and the Dusted Valley Vintners touch with Syrah is evident with this bargain bottling that highlights their work in the Horse Heaven Hills with young McNary Vineyard and acclaimed viticulturist Tom Merkle. There’s some additional investment by the Braunel and Johnson families in these reds, pulling from their own estate plantings as well as a new French oak barrel program (10%), leading to aromas of blueberry, black cherry and caramel. They take a more cool-climate approach with this Syrah than they do with those from the sultry Wahluke Slope, and the inclusion of Petite Sirah (4%) adds a bit more pop to the pleasing structure of Montana huckleberry and plum. These wines continued to presented across the nation through Dusted Valley’s collaboration with Dreyfus, Ashby & Co., the New York importer whose clients include Domaine Drouhin and Château Petrus.
