Apex Cellars 2017 The Catalyst Red Blend, Columbia Valley, $17

This brand is entering its fifth decade of existence, launched in the late 1980s with Brian Carter as the founding winemaker. Seattle-based Precept took it over in 2008, and this Catalyst is a tasty link to Carter’s penchant for blending. At its core is a trio of Precept-controlled- vineyards – Alder Ridge, Canyon Vineyard Ranch and Willow Crest – with contributions from famed Boushey Vineyard and Sagemoor Farms sister plantings Dionysus and Weinbau, combined by veteran winemaker Jon Zimmerman for a wide-ranging blend of Merlot (30%), Syrah (29%,) Mourvèdre (11%) with smaller contributions Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a rather sophisticated and food-friendly weekday red that sprinkles Horse Heaven Hills dustiness over the top of the blend of President plum, cassis and cherry pie notes amid an enjoyable and tangy structure.
