ICON by Waterbrook 2017 Sangiovese, Columbia Valley, $36

This tier by winemaker John Freeman targets Waterbrook’s nicely appointed tasting room west of Walla Walla on the highway to Lowden, and pulls the Sangiovese from Art den Hoed Vineyard in the western portion of the Yakima Valley. Touches of Petit Verdot and Syrah add body without taking away any of the brightness inherent this food-friendly Italian red. Mouthwatering aromas of strawberry, raspberry and cherry jam include a light scrape of toast. On the palate, think of golden raspberry, cassis and sweet herbs. There’s a rather good grip of green tea and currant skins in the finish. Freeman suggests serving this with pizza, tomato-based pasta sauces and citrus-influenced fish dishes.
