One of Washington’s most famous plantings, this vintage marked the first under the ownership of Terlato Wines International, the Chicago-based company that purchased the 120- acre vineyard from the Gelles family. Klipsun has a reputation for producing massively structured wines, but Mike Januik achieves approachable balance in this Merlot upon its release. The 20 months in a program lead by new French oak offers a fair amount of toast, vanilla and cinnamon, but there’s a continuous stream of red fruit that comes of the forefront as cassis and Bing cherry skins make for a juicy finish with beveled tannins.
