Argyle Winery 2018 Grower Series Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley $27

The flagship Pinot Noir of this historic brand remains steadfast as one of Oregon’s most approachable and affordable examples. Nate Klostermann, only the second winemaker in Argyle’s 30-year history, now produces more than seven distinctive expressions of Pinot Noir, and this vintage marks the commercial debut of young Giving Tree Vineyard. Lone Star Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills serves as the foundation of the fruit, backed by nearby Spirit Hill, Knudsen Vineyard in the Dundee Hills and 138-acre Giving Tree southwest of Salem. It’s remarkably floral as lilac and lavender are joined by dusty blueberry and SweeTart cherry candy. There’s a lovely ripe purple fruit profile as Bing cherry and blueberry flavors are met by charmingly sandy tannins and a long finish of blackcurrant juice. Suggested pairing include Pork Tenderloin with Blueberry Glaze and Mushrooms and Black Beans & Brown Rice Mushroom Sliders with Felton & Mary’s Smokey Brown Sugar Sauce.
