As much acclaim as “king” Cab receives in Washington state, it was the quality of its Merlot grown that helped attract the attention of Michel Rolland – the famed Pomerol producer who has been a prized partner at Long Shadows since Allen Shoup recruited him to help launch the unique project west of Walla Walla. This time, the final blend of Merlot (75%), with Cabernet Sauvignon (21%) and Petit Verdot (4%) features a significant contribution from historic Sagemoor Farms sites Bacchus and Dionysus vineyards. The devotion to French oak, 85% new, and some Red Mountain sourcing contribute to the profile of cherry pie and dark chocolate, while the influences of Horse Heaven Hills fruit explains the hint of graphite. Sweet, fine-grained tannins, particularly for Merlot, help make this a standout, and the juicy blue fruit finish adds delicious balance.
