Abbott Claim 2018 Abbott Claim Vineyard Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton, $65
Acclaimed Thoroughbred breeder Antony Beck embarks on his second decade as a member of the Oregon wine industry, and Abbott Claim marks his second brand in this neighborhood that renowned winemaker Ken Wright made famous. While Beck’s father, Graham, planted a flag in South Africa with methode Champenoise, Antony has tasked winemaker Alban Debeaulieu with not only the Angela Vineyards project that Wright helped shepherd for Beck until 2017, but also the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for Abbott Claim. Here’s the debut Pinot Noir of the brand named after the acclaimed vineyard Wright established, and it’s well-built, focusing on dark red fruit tones that are joined by cinnamon toast and refined tannins. Bing cherry and pomegranate make for a juicy frame that allows for a bit of mint in the finish.
