When the Allens took over this property in 2014, the California nut farmers soon began to learn of the fascinating potential that exists in the soil composition across their 2Hawk Estate Vineyard, and thanks to the Klamath Mountains, Darow Series is the prevalent soil type for this portion of the Bear Creek growing region near Medford, Ore. Malbec has been a great fit for the 2Hawk program, and winemaker Kiley Evans has years of decorated success in Southern Oregon with the juicy red Bordeaux. This begins with a perfumy and dense nose of lavender, clove and mocha across a bench of cherry and chalkboard dust. There’s richness to the flavors of cherry and pomegranate, a pleasing backbone of structure thanks to the contribution of Cabernet Sauvignon (8%) while offering delicious finishing acidity and a lick of vanilla. Suggested pairings for their Darow Series Malbec include seared bone-in beef tenderloin dusted with black and pink peppercorns along with a mushroom-parsnip ragu and smoked blue cheese chips.
