Crimson Wine Group’s young production facility for Double Canyon is about than five minutes from the eastern shoulders of Red Mountain, and this bottling features two remarkable sites for Cabernet Sauvignon on both flanks of this storied growing region — historic Klipsun Vineyard and Block 51 from the Shaw family’s rising star Quintessence Vineyard. Kate Michaud took over these eight barrels from Jason Ledbetter when she arrived at Double Canyon in February 2017, and the results are magical. It’s a Cab loaded with dusty cherry, Marionberry, vanilla and lavender notes, and the stream of purple fruit comes with ample yet supple plum-skin tannins. Her decision to include a dose of Petit Verdot (4%) adds to the depth. There’s a wealth of juiciness at the finish reminiscent of elderberry.
