A decade ago, Aryn Morell began working with Royal Slope growers/owners Josh and Lisa Lawrence, and the Walla Walla winemaker approached the warm 2017 vintage as one to be particularly careful with during the fermentation so as to not extract too much in the way of tannins. His dual-pronged approach with concrete (68%) and stainless steel (32%) tanks, then a program of 50% new French oak barrels, combined for a superb expression of Washington Malbec using the Lawrence family’s Scarline and Solaksen vineyards. Beautiful dark cherry and spice plum aromas lead to a remarkably seductive delivery of those dark fruit tones that are bathed in juiciness, supple tannins and a lingering kiss of Bing cherry and black pepper. Suggested pairings include roasted pork, leaner cuts of beef, gamy meats, mushroom dishes and a charcuterie plate with gouda and blue cheeses.
