Jones of Washington earned the 2012 Washington Winery of the Year award from Wine Press Northwest magazine thanks in large part to the winemaking by Victor Palencia with fruit off the Wahluke Slope. His talents prompted the two-decade publication to name Palencia Wine Company as its 2019 Pacific Northwest Winery of the Year, and he’s garnered several gold medals for this Petit Verdot from historic Rosebud Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope. He masterfully works with a grape most often used for blending into a single varietal that displays aromas of dark berries, spice and plums, then produces more plumbs, blackberries and dark currant in the mouth, concluding with just enough edge to its tannins to complement its juicy acidity and lingering finish. He pays tribute to his vine-tending father with the El Viñador tier, and it deserves to be served alongside a sirloin dusted with cracked black pepper and sea salt.
