Boise-area winemaker Earl Sullivan sources Syrah from premier vineyards in Washington state and Idaho’s Snake River Valley, which includes this work off Sawtooth’s Block 46. Wine Press Northwest’s 2016 Idaho Winery of the Year earned two gold medals in the Syrah category at the 2021 Cascadia International Wine Competition, and this went onto to win best of class, Best Red and Best of Show. It’s a deep, dark purple wine with aromas of black cherry, chocolate-covered blueberries and toasted wood that lift right out of the glass. It’s a big, bold, and smooth fluid with lots of earth and spice, blueberry-skin tannins, and lingering pinches of violet and tobacco. Grill a steak, plate up stir-fry crispy beef with green peppers, stir up a porcini mushroom risotto or visit the Sullivans’s website for their recipe for Telaya-Braised Short Ribs with Polenta.
