Seattle winemaker Tim Narby wins awards using some of Washington state’s most famous vineyard. In this case, he achieved critical acclaim with little-known Arianses Vineyard near Desert Aire on the Wahluke Slope. This Right Bank Bordeaux-inspired blend from Bruce Zunser’s vineyard not far from the Columbia River leads with Merlot (50%) and followed by Cabernet Sauvignon (25%), Petit Verdot (14%) and Cabernet Franc. Bright cherry, plum jam, sage and dried herbs are pleasing and fit in with the typicity of these varietals. The tannins are plush and provide an equalizer for the zesty acidity. Hard cheeses, beef, lamb and hearty stews will be good table mates. This spring, it received gold medal at the Cascadia International Wine Competition, and Narby’s wines are available at his South Park neighborhood production facility as well as The Tasting Room of Washington near the Pike Place Market.
