It makes sense for an Argentine winemaker working in the Pacific Northwest to cast a new light on Malbec, and Juan Pablo Valot does so in quite delicious fashion. This work with Kelly Vineyard in Southern Oregon is not a rosé because there’s no skin contact prior to pressing — akin to the recent rise of “white” Pinot Noir. And yet, it offers a gorgeous pink salmon color and a nose of pink strawberry, plum juice, blood orange and cantaloupe. Inside, the pink strawberry flavor is joined by white peach with a texture that hints at green banana. Its pleasing bitterness and refreshing finish make it quite easy to like. The 2019 vintage marked Valot’s debut with this wine, and the response prompted him to double production in 2020.
