Two decades ago, Arygle’s first winemaker, Texas native Rollin Soles, oversaw the plantings of Dijon clones 95 and 96 at Argyle’s estate Lone Star Vineyard, a warmer site north of Salem. His longtime protege, Nate Klostermann, continues to hold the bar high with went through 100% malolactic fermentation and 100% barrel fermentation – a tradition that began with the 1992 vintage. Klostermann incorporates some fruit from the cooler Spirit Hill Vineyard to create vibrancy and complexity befitting of its Master Series designation. Classic aromas of lemon, pear butter, shortbread and toast from the 18 months in oak — 30% new barrels — lead to a delicious blend of lemon and Asian pear with a light lick of butterscotch and thin slice of toast in the finish.
