The Miller family quietly farms more 800 acres of wine grapes, making them one of the largest operations not only in the Yakima Valley but throughout Washington state. Marcus Miller handed over the winemaking duties in 2017 to Travis Maple, a product of Washington State University’s viticulture and enology program. His late September harvest of this Italian red and 29-day fermentation resulted in a wonderful nose of light strawberry, raspberry and white peach, and there’s a sense of each on the palate. It carries a great texture and there’s not a hole anywhere to be found as Rainier cherry and raspberry easily push past the scant residual sugar (0.6%) and beyond the finish. Suggested pairings include Melon and Prosciutto, Shrimp Tzatziki, roast turkey and cheeses such as
brie or pecorino.
