Mary Derby’s woman-owned winery hasn’t used artwork on any of their bottles that depicts a male until this release with the Roman god of strength — Hercules. There’s plenty of power to the fruit to support the program of French oak in the six barrels off Stoney Vine Vineyard in The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. The estate planting of Dusted Valley Vintners brings classic aromas of river rock and smokiness that lead to directly to campfire s’mores, huckleberry and red currant. Inside, it’s a rich entry of ripe blue fruit, accompanied by sandy tannins and capped by a savory finish of black olive tapenade. If an example of Syrah from “The Rocks” can be charming, this is it.
