Tipsy Canyon Winery 2018 Merlot, Lake Chelan, $34
Mark Garvin retired from Boeing to focus on his young winery in Manson, Wash., and nearby Amos Rome Vineyard overlooking the north shore of Lake Chelan continues to help the Washington State University product turn out hits. Inviting and fun aromas of black cherry jam, light toast, cinnamon oil and grape Pixy Stix powder turn into delicious, balanced and complex flavors of black cherry, grilled red bell pepper and roasted beet flavors with vanilla in the background. Nicely managed tannins and a bright finish serve as reminders that Merlot in Washington can be approachable rather than brutish. And Tipsy Canyon’s young 2019 vintage of Merlot showcases the consistency of Garvin’s work with a double gold at the 2021 North Central Wine Awards judging in June.
