Canoe Ridge Vineyard 2017 Limited Edition Carménère, Columbia Valley, $46

By on September 20, 2021

Under the Tasting Room Exclusives tier are more than a dozen gems from the cellars of Canoe Ridge Vineyard in Walla Walla, and Haydn Mouat did an ideal job of shepherding these four barrels from Bill Murray’s final crush at this Walla Walla Valley landmark. While the brand is linked historically to the namesake vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills, Carménère also is grown at Canyon Vineyard Ranch in the Yakima Valley – another breadbasket for parent company Precept Wine. This is a classic example of the erstwhile lost Bordeaux red variety, opening with aromas of green peppercorns and anise followed by dusty blackcurrant and black cherry. Those notes are matched on the palate that will appeal to Cabernet Franc fans with a focus on green bean and Bing cherry. Its medium tannin structure and finish of dried mint and trail of cherry juice combine to make it a very approachable, lower alcohol and engaging Bordeaux red.
