Five years ago, the Seattle-based Ackley Beverage Group made a splash in the Pacific Northwest wine industry with its investment in the Marchesi family’s organic-driven Montinore Estate west of Portland. They followed that with the purchase of what it has rebranded as Tidalstar Vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton and the launch of Landlines Estates, a luxury brand that involves talented winemaker Anna Matzinger of Archery Summit fame. Cataclysm signals AckBev’s debut as a Washington state producer, and they rely heavily on the Monson family for this Cab from the newly established Goose Gap American Viticultural Area near Red Mountain. The level of extraction is remarkable, and it shows immediately with aromas of cherry extract and plum juice that are joined by vanilla bean, fresh cedar and ground nutmeg. Intense and exotic also help describe the palate, which showcases a purity of dark red fruit that’s bright, almost tangy, with a finish that’s almost unending. It’s a fascinating Cab at an astonishing price.
