The legacy of the late Jim Witte now includes this compelling project from the vineyard he nurtured south of Forest Grove that’s the first Riesling effort by Dobbes Family Estate in its 20-year history. Oregon State grad Andy McVay took over the winemaking for founder Joe Dobbes in 2017 after spending nine years in the Dundee cellar, and McVay takes a dry approach that’s true to its mark on the International Riesling Foundation’s Taste Profile scale. Fun aromas of Uncola and grape Pixy Stix lead to a solid structure featuring starfruit, jicama and dried apple with secondary notes of jasmine and lavender. Food-friendly citrus pith in the finish lends itself to suggested pairings include soft-rind cheese, papaya salad, white fish such as cod, halibut or tilapia, fried oysters and lemon panna cotta.
