Part of his Vintner Collection, Seattle-area winemaker Randy Brooks knows that Italian reds such as Barbera need heat, so he worked with Jerry Milbrandt’s Northridge Vineyard on the steamy Wahluke Slope for this layered example. There’s blackberry, cherry, blueberry and cocoa in the nose, followed by luscious cherry flavors with sandy tannins and tangy red currant in the long finish that makes room for toast, graphite and red peppercorns. Serve it up with a slab of lasagna.
