U.S. Navy veteran Kyle Welch has proven to be a quick study with Merlot – a follow-up to his first vintage that he pulled from McKinley Springs Vineyard, just an hour from his tasting room along the rivershore in Richland, Wash. It’s a nose filled with dark blue fruit, reminiscent of plum and black currant, joined by a chocolate-covered cherry. There’s remarkable depth and penetration on the palate as those blue-fruited notes continue. The use of oak is agreeable, so are the smooth tannins and the big finish gathers up some elderberry and black pepper. There is so much to like as this product of Washington State University’s winemaking program continues to build a reputation for his Majik-al program.
