HOOD RIVER, Ore. — In hindsight, it wasn’t surprising that some Pacific Northwest’s top wine buyers selected an Albariño from Idaho’s Clearwater Canyon Cellars and the 2018 Cabernet Franc by Lake Chelan Winery as top wines at the 10th annual Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition.
Coco Umiker has won major regional awards in recent years with the Albariño grapes she and her viticulturist husband Karl Umiker purchase from Crawford Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. This fall, their 2021 Albariño won Best of Show at The Invite in Hood River, Ore.
“That’s pretty awesome,” Coco Umiker said. “We’ve done pretty well in competitions the past few years, but this is the first time we’ve ever done that. I guess the thing that’s shocking is not that that wine was loved, but that it squeaked between all those others. The competition there is so stiff with such incredible wines.”

This year’s sweepstakes included The Invite’s Best Red Wine — the Lake Chelan 2018 Cougar Crest Vineyard Cabernet Franc from the Walla Walla Valley. Earlier this year, that wine won Best of Show at the Sunset International Wine Competition — which helped raise the profile of the family-owned brand in Manson, Wash.
Rounding out the sweepstakes was the Elk Cove Vineyards 2018 Estate La Bohème Brut Rosé from the Willamette Valley, the Cinder Wines 2021 Rosé of Cinsaut from Idaho’s Snake River Valley and the LA FRENZ Estate Winery nonvintage Tawny Port from British Columbia’s Naramata Bench.
The Great Northwest Invitational recruits a number of West Coast wine buyers and influentials to nominate entries and then meet at the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel & Spa to judge. Clearwater Canyon impressed that panel with more than its Albariño.
The Umikers were awarded double gold medals and best of class for their 2019 Malbec and 2019 Phinny Hill Vineyard Reserve Carménère. The 2018 Heritage Series Louis Delsol Cabernet Sauvignon, produced strictly with grapes from the Lewis-Clark Valley, received a double gold. And their 2020 The Wine Project, a Petit Verdot-driven blend pulling from both Idaho and Washington, grabbed a gold medal — giving the Umikers a total of five medals gold or better.
Maryhill Winery leads The Invite with 9 gold medals
Several of the Northwest’s most historic brands and largest companies made a delicious impression upon the judges.
Leading the hit parade by amassing nine gold medals was Maryhill Winery, the family-owned producer with headquarters in Goldendale, Wash., and bistro/tasting rooms in Woodinville, Spokane and in Vancouver across the Columbia from Portland.
New Zealand-born winemaker Richard Batchelor displayed his versatility across the spectrum and various price points. There was the entry-level 2020 Winemaker’s White ($19) and 2019 Muscat Canelli, the 2021 Otis Vineyard Albariño and 2020 Rosé of Sangiovese. On the reds, Batchelor delivered golds for Zinfandel, Malbec, Elephant Mountain Vineyard GSM, Northridge Vineyard Syrah and Painted Hills Vineyard Tempranillo.
Third-generation winemaker Tyler Williams of Kiona Vineyards on Red Mountain proved the family’s cellar is in capable hands with five gold medals. Double gold medals went to his Roussanne-led 2021 Sage Advice and 2018 Red Mountain Reserve Red Wine. Gold medals went to his 2021 Late Harvest Riesling, 2021 Columbia Valley Riesling and the always-popular Lemberger ($18) from 2020.
Chateau Ste. Michelle won four gold medals, led by the 2021 Cold Creek Vineyard Riesling that won a double gold medal and was named Best Riesling.
Intrinsic Wine Co., the brainchild of Juan Muñoz-Oca — now the chief winemaker for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates — astounded judges with the 2020 Red Blend, which won best of class, and the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon. Each is $20 and production of each is a reported 500,000 cases. In total, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates produced seven gold medals, an effort that included the H3 Wines 2019 Merlot ($14).
Aquilini USA, created by the family that owns the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League, saw its wine group win five gold medals. Two double gold medals went to Chasing Rain, led by a best-of-class Merlot blend. The Be Human 2019 Merlot and 10,000 Hours 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon each won gold, as did the eclectic Dixie & Bass brand for its 2020 Rosé. All five were produced under the direction of Joshua Maloney.
Columbia Winery, the brand owned by global giant E. & J. Gallo, emerged with the prestigious title of Best Cabernet Sauvignon for its 20219 Cab off Red Mountain. Sadly, the Woodinville tasting room for that brand is scheduled to close on Dec. 22.
Across the state, Liberty Lake Wine Cellars and self-taught winemaker Mark Lathrop lived up to their billing as Great Northwest Wine’s 2022 Washington Winery to Watch by reeling in four gold medals — all for 2019 reds from either Red Mountain or nearby Candy Mountain. His Cabernet Sauvignon from Scooteney Flats was in the discussion for Best Cab after being awarded a double gold.
Chile native Matías Kusulas, head winemaker for the Lawrence family’s Gård Vintners and Desert Wind, used that family’s grapes to earn four gold medals for two boutique labels that he’s started as small yet serious side projects — Massalto Wines and Valo. Both brands, which are co-owned/managed by Montana chef/sommelier Michael Ruhland, are poured in boutique tasting rooms along the upscale Vancouver USA waterfront. The 2019 Mourvèdre was a double gold and the 2020 Cinsaut for Massalto, while the Valo 2019 Right Bank was awarded Best Red Blend and the 2019 Reserve Chardonnay achieved a gold.
Ambassador Wines of Washington turned its estate plantings on Red Mountain in a trio of gold medals, led by their 2019 Plenipotentiary that won a double gold and the honor as Best Syrah.
It was no surprise that Brian Carter Cellars in Woodinville scored a trio of double gold medals for blended wines from the Yakima Valley, an effort led by the 2018 Tuttorosso that won best of class, followed by the Tempranillo-driven 2019 Abracadabra and Viognier-laden 2021 Oriana.
Barnard Griffin’s 2021 Albariño — also sourced from Crawford Vineyard — battled the Clearwater Canyon entry for best-of-class honors after winning a double gold. The Richland winery’s nicely priced $17 Cabernet Sauvignon grabbed a gold medal.
Four Feathers Wine Services in Prosser, led by rising star Rebecca De Kleine, recently began to showcase the type of work it performs for its 400 clients. Her crew earned gold medals with the Block & Row 2019 Merlot and DarkRock 2019 Red Blend, which features Grenache.
Walla Walla icon Abeja, which won the 2021 Invite with a Chardonnay, came close to running it back as the Wampflers’s 2021 Chardonnay won best of class. That wine’s accolades this year include its No. 2 ranking on The Seattle Times Best Northwest Wines of 2022. Abeja’s flagship 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon received a gold medal, too. Nearby, Yellow Bird Vineyard grew the Syrah that earned Joshua West of Elephant Seven Wine in downtown Walla Walla a double gold.
Ancestry Cellars on the north side of Lake Chelan won gold medals for its Chenin Blanc and Malbec. Lagrioth winemaker Jeana Steiner used fruit from both sides of Lake Chelan to craft gold medals — a 2021 Pinot Noir Blanc from her family’s young Chelan Valley Farms estate near Manson and a 2021 Clos CheValle Vineyard Pinot Noir. And near downtown Chelan, winemaker Holly Brown and her husband, Kevin, earned gold medals for their Siren Songs Wines project via the Temp-led 2017 A Night in Madrid and 2021 Belle Tavel rosé.
DeLille Cellars and Jason Gorski continue to show remarkable consistency with the Right Bank-Bordeaux inspired D2 and white Bordeaux-influenced Chaleur Blanc programs for the reinging Pacific Northwest Winery of the Year, winning gold medals for both, including a double gold for the 2019 D2.
A former DeLille winemaker, Chris Peterson, won gold medals for retired NFL quarterbacks Dan Marino and Damon Huard of Passing Time in Woodinville. Their 2019 Walla Walla Valley Cab won a double gold medal, and their entry-level 2019 Columbia Valley Red Wine picked up a gold medal.
Another Woodinville producer — Tinte Cellars — received golds for Noah Reed Fox’s winemaking with a double gold for Malbec and gold for Viognier.
Napa giant Duckhorn scored two gold medals for Canvasback red wines from Red Mountain — a 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2019 Syrah. L’Ecole N° 41 was awarded gold medals for its 2019 Columbia Valley Merlot and Sèmillon-led 2021 Luminesce.
Woodinville winemaker Mari Womack of Damsel Cellars wowed judges with her buzz-worthy 2019 Fates, which won a double gold and emerged as the Best GSM of The Invite.
Five Star Cellars at the Walla Walla airport and winemaker Matt Huse soared off with the award for Best Merlot. Chuck Reininger, who got his start at the airport, also earned BOC via the Helix Wines 2020 Sangiovese grown by renowned Royal Slope viticulturist Ed Kelley at Stillwater Creek Vineyard.
Armstrong Family Winery, now with estate vines in the Walla Walla Valley, earned gold medals from the 2019 vintage for The Scotsman Syrah and Four Birds blend. Dahlman Cellars, which recently opened a tasting room in Tacoma, scored gold medals for two Cab-based blends from the 2020 vintage — Red Bench and The Actuary.
Willamette Valley: Praise for Pinots by Elk Cove, Dobbes
The Campbell family’s Elk Cove Vineyards and Pike Road Wines brands in the Willamette Valley saw four of its wines win a gold or better. The Elk Cove 2018 Estate La Bohème Brut Rosé reached the sweepstakes as the Best Sparkling Wine. It was nearly joined in the sweeps by the 2021 Estate Pinot Noir, which won a double gold and earned acclaim as Best Pinot Noir of the judging. The Elk Cove 2020 Estate Riesling was a high-scoring gold. The Pike Road 2021 Pinot Gris, made by associate winemaker Heather Perkin, won a double gold medal and was voted Best Pinot Gris, which was no surprise considering her Pike Road 2016 Pinot Gris won best of show at the 2017 Invite.
Dobbes Family Estate in Dundee, Ore., struck gold five times in various ways. There was the brilliant 2021 Grenache Blanc from the Rogue Valley, a 2020 rosé and three expressions of Pinot Noir — including the remarkably priced Wine By Joe ($19.)
King Estate Winery in Eugene earned a double gold for its flagship 2021 Pinot Noir, a gold for its flagship 2021 Pinot Gris, a gold for its 2021 Rosé of Pinot Noir and best of class for the 2021 Sauvignon Blanc — a variety that winemaker Brent Stone’s team recently began working with and using it to immediately wow critics.
Neighboring producers in the McMinnville American Viticultural Area used cool-climate varieties to combine for three gold medals. Ariel Eberle of Yamhill Valley Vineyards won for the Burger family’s 2016 Reserve Pinot Noir and 2019 Estate Riesling. Youngberg Hill grower/winemaker Wayne Bailey earned a gold for the 2018 Chardonnay under his reserve Bailey Family Wine label.
Cardwell Hill Cellars, which Great Northwest Wine selected as 2021 Oregon Winery of the Year, reeled in two gold medals for estate-grown Pinot Noir in Philomath.
Portland Wine Company’s Matt Berson worked with Burgundy varieties for two gold medals — his precocious 2021 Love & Squalor Gamay Noir and bargain 2019 GarageLand Pinot Noir ($20.) Dundee winemaker Brianne Day won a double gold for the Day Wines 2021 Tears of Vulcan, a white Rhône blend, and a gold for her 2018 Johan Vineyard Pinot Noir. J. Christopher earned high points and gold medals for the 2017 Appassionata Andante Pinot Noir ($135) and 2018 Medici Vineyard Pinot Noir ($70).
Along the Mt. Hood Wine Trail, historic Saint Josef’s Winery entered two of the biggest bargains of The Invite with gold medals going to the L’Esprit Gewürztraminer ($15) and 2018 Estate Cuvée Pinot Noir ($20).
Joe Dobbes, who stepped away from his successful namesake brand in 2017, scored a gold medal from The Invite judges with the first Chardonnay under his new Iterum Wines project with wife Patricia, showcasing their young Orchard House Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills.
To the south in Corvallis, Argentine winemaker Juan Pablo Valot won a double gold for Pinot Noir and a gold for Tempranillo under his Valcan Cellars label.
Idaho gems include Invite’s top rosé by Cinder
Boise-based winemaker Melanie Krause, who left Chateau Ste. Michelle to launch her Cinder Wines project in the Snake River Valley, was also among the individual standouts at The Invite. She reached the sweepstakes with her best-of-class 2021 Rosé of Cinsaut, while her 2021 Dry Viognier also earned a double gold and best of class. And the Cinder 2020 Off-Dry Riesling received a double gold and nearly won her a third BOC award.
Huston Vineyards along Caldwell’s Chicken Dinner Road once again turned heads with its well-known Chicken Dinner White, a best-of-class winner at $16, and its young estate Grüner Veltliner program. Up the Clearwater River from Lewiston, Rivaura Estate Vineyards & Winery — the Great Northwest Wine 2022 Idaho Winery to Watch — saw its riverside-grown Grenache go on to be selected as the Best Grenache of the judging. Lewis-Clark Valley producer Two Bad Labs Vineyard used estate-grown Sèmillon for a double gold.
So. Oregon shines with Grüner, Tempranillo
Southern Oregon producers also shined, led by Reustle – Prayer Rock Vineyards in the Umpqua Valley. Stephen Reustle, who helms the 2017 Pacific Northwest Winery of the Year, predictably won best of class for his double gold 2021 Green Lizard Grüner Veltliner and gold for the 2021 Estate Selection Grüner. His 2019 Winemaker’s Reserve Tempranillo also received a gold.
Umpqua Valley winemaker Terry Brandborg helped Roseburg physicians Stephen and Susan Williams of Trella Vineyards earn acclaim as the 2020 Oregon Winery to Watch. At The Invite, the 2017 Grüner farmed by the Williams family brought back a double gold for Trella.
Ashland showpiece Belle Fiore, led by former Domaine Serene winemaker Rob Folin, showed its flair with Italian red varieties by winning gold for Teroldego and Montelpulciano. Rogue Valley vines also produced the Tempranillo that Jonathan Scott Oberlander of J. Scott Cellars in Eugene turned into a best-of-class winner.
British Columbia golds, weak dollar beckon U.S. tourists
The U.S.-Canada border opened up in time for the Great Northwest Wine to present British Columbia wines to The Invite panel. Those northerly producers combined for 15 gold medals, which included four double golds and two best-of-class winners.
LA FRENZ Estate on the Naramata Bench, led by Aussie winemaker Jeff Martin, used a pair of fortified wines to earn acclaim, including the nonvintage Tawny Port that went double gold, best of class and into the sweepstakes as the Best Sweet Wine. Martin’s talents, which include 23 career Platinum Awards and invitations to pour at McMinnville’s International Pinot Noir Celebration, also turned his Desperation Hill Pinot Noir into gold at this year’s Invite.
Stag’s Hollow Winery proved again what a skilled winemaker and savvy viticulture can accomplish by earning a double gold for its estate 2019 Renaissance Merlot and a gold for its 2019 Tempranillo.
Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery turned two aromatic whites from their Golden Mile Bench estate above Highway 97 into gold medals — the 2021 Old Vines Auxerrois and 2021 Classic Riesling. Each retail for less than $16 Canadian. On the other side of Road 8 from Gehringer is Hester Creek Estate Winery, which won a double gold for its Merlot-based Character Red ($19.99) and a gold for its methode Champenoise 2019 Old Vine Brut.

Angie says
OH SO EXCITED about this wonderful review but there is a TYPO. The paragraph says: “Portland Wine Company’s Matt Berson worked with Burgundy varieties for two gold medals — his precocious 2021 Love & Squalor Gamay Noir and bargain 2019 GarageBand Pinot Noir ($20.) ” BUT the wine is called GARAGELAND!! (NOT GARAGEBAND — that’s an app, I think.
Eric Degerman says
Greetings, Angie.
THANKS for pointing OUT the TYPO!
Sincerely,
Eric
