It makes delicious sense that Maryhill’s success with Zinfandel carries over to Primitivo, which in Italian language references its early-ripening qualities. There’s density in every direction of this grape native to the Adriatic region as layers of blackberry and Bing cherry are joined by hints of roasted meat and fennel pollen. Tannins akin to Turkish coffee grounds and Craisin in the finish make for a fascinating ride. Qualifying award: Seattle Wine Awards (double gold)
