Wenatchee Valley vintner Allen Mathews graduated from Oregon State University’s microbiology program, and later in life the commercial fisherman designed and built a remarkable tasting room that features wines from his estate plantings. This is his second Platinum for Franc, which brings notes of violets, green pepper, strawberry and cranberry. Its spicy and peppery approach does not get lost amid the tannin structure that’s taut but not overwhelming as a finish of cassis allows the wine to achieve balance.
