A measured amount of Petit Verdot from Beightol family plantings at Double Canyon and Phinny Hill vineyards typically makes its way into a handful of reds each vintage by Kitsap Peninsula chiropractor Brian Petersen, even some Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings. In this case, his standalone effort labeled as Petit Verdot — a product of his 10th commercial vintage — is beveled with some Cabernet Sauvignon (7%) and Merlot (1%). The significant investment in French oak barrels is apparent in the dense aromas of dark chocolate, black cherry and blueberry with sweet herbs akin to lavender and juniper. The flavor profile of blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry is framed deliciously by pliable tannins and oak spice, making for a medium body that’s capped by blueberry/pomegranate juice.
