KENNEWICK, Wash. — For the second straight year, a judging panel made up mostly of winemakers voted a red Rhône entry from Will Wetmore’s Veer Wine Project near Boise, Idaho as the competition’s No. 1 — a 2022 Mataro.
“I don’t even know what to say,” Wetmore said, “but that’s awesome! It’s been really surreal the past year. These awards are gratifying. It’s cool, and it’s validating that I did pick the right thing for a career.”
The Chaberton Estate Winery 2023 Estate Siegerrebe from British Columbia’s Fraser Valley came up just short of overtaking the Veer Mourvèdre for the competition’s No. 1.
British Columbia would place two wines into the sweepstakes portion as the Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery 2023 Minus-9 Ehrenfelser Icewine stood out as the Best Sweet Wine.
In a surprise, a 2022 Pinot Noir from the Snake River Valley — not the Willamette Valley — emerged as the best of class. That was produced by Indian Creek Winery, and it marked the second straight sweepstakes appearance in the Cascadia for winemaker/co-owner Mike McClure, who used a Syrah to win Best Rosé in 2023.
Columbia Gorge producer Rich Cushman proved his mettle with two top awards — the Best Sparkling Wine and Best Sauvignon Blanc — for Mt. Hood Winery.
Wetmore extends best-of-show string for Idaho wine
This spring also marked the fourth straight year at the Cascadia International where the best-of-show wine was made in Idaho with Idaho-grown grapes.
In 2021, it was a 20117 methode Champenoise by 3100 Cellars and Hailey Minder. In 2022, Earl Sullivan of Telaya Wine Co., turned a 2018 Syrah from the Snake River Valley into the No. 1 wine of the Cascadia.
Last year, the Veer Wine Project 2021 Garnacha — aka Grenache — stood out as the top entry.
“It’s super gratifying being an Idaho brand because our whole industry has a chip on its shoulder,” says Wetmore, a distant relative to Charles Wetmore, a 19th century pioneer of the California wine industry. “We feel like the underdog.”
And perhaps Wetmore will receive an invite to the next Rhône Ranger event or Hospice du Rhône. Of the whopping 10 gold medals awarded at the Cascadia to wines he made, four were for work with Rhône varieties.
And just as he does for Grenache, Wetmore uses the Spanish moniker for Mourvèdre. The source for the 2022 Mataro was Block 71 at Sawtooth Vineyard not far from the religiously conservative city of Nampa. The 2021 Grenache came off Block 70, and both were grown by viticulturist Jake Cragin of Winemakers LLC. That wide-ranging vineyard company is closely linked to Seattle-based Precept Wine & Spirits, and Wetmore quickly became a fan of Cragin, who serves on the Idaho Wine Commission as a governor’s appointee. Sawtooth was the vineyard source for the 2018 Syrah by Telaya that won the 2021 Cascadia.
“Honestly, it all started when I saw on Instagram a post by Jake that Sawtooth was planting a GSM block,” Wetmore says of the Rhône-inspired blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. “I think that was in 2016, which is when I really got serious. GSMs were just becoming a thing, but I knew I wanted those Rhône grapes.
“And we’ve been paying our bills, so that helps,” Wetmore added with a wink.
Earlier this year, Great Northwest Wine named Veer Wine Project as its 2024 Idaho Winery of the Year, and the following for Wetmore’s program prompted him to open a tasting room near downtown Boise for his brand. The wines are produced at the University of Idaho’s business incubator facility in Caldwell, and Wetmore makes his wines in conjunction with the two brands created and owned by retired pilot Tim Harless — Hat Ranch Winery and Vale Wine Co. In 2014, Harless gave Wetmore his start in the wine industry, and the success stories have continued, backed by the Cascadia International golds for Veer (five), Hat Ranch (four) and Vale (one).
Tsillan Cellars leads WA wine with 6 golds
Lake Chelan leader Tsillan Cellars received best-of-class awards for two Rhône varieties grown on Dr. Bob Jankelson’s estate — Syrah and Viognier — which were among the total of six gold medals entered by Tsillan Cellars winemaker Garrett Grubbs, which included the 2021 Estate Reserve Syrah, a red Meritage, a Muscat blend and a rosé.
Lone Point Cellars, a young producer overlooking the confluence of the Okanogan and Columbia rivers near the town of Brewster, won the award for Best Cabernet Sauvignon after earning a double gold medal in the preliminary round. Owner/winemaker/orchardist Jim Divis, who credits the consulting work of winemaker Jessica Munnell, also scored gold medals for two other reds from Red Mountain.
Maine winemaker Aaron Peet, who trained at Walla Walla Community College, used grapes from Washington to earn three gold medals for Cellardoor Winery in the Portland suburb of Lincolnville. That showing included a best-of-class for a Chenin Blanc-based blend from the 2021 vintage called The Buoy.
Coyote Canyon Winery and the Andrews family’s vines in the Horse Heaven Hills continue to supply winemaker Justin Michaud with the fruit to spin Rhône whites into top awards as the 2023 Marsanne received a double gold and the 2023 Roussanne returned a gold medal.
Victor Palencia checked in with double gold medals for his 2021 Syrah and 2023 Rosélia rosé. The 2021 Malbec under his Vino la Monarcha won a gold, and his input on the Tucannon Cellars 2023 White Mourvèdre continues to help WSU grad Konnor denHoed earn a gold medal for his family’s winery via the Cascadia in consecutive years. Last year, denHoed’s 2022 estate rosé with Mourvèdre also went on to win a Platinum.
Wade Wolfe and Thurston Wolfe showed his skill with Port-style bottlings by scoring a double gold using 2020 Touriga Nacional from Lonesome Spring Vineyard a sweet bargain ($16). Wolfe’s flagship white blend of Pinot Gris and Viognier ($16) predictably won a gold medal.
The Williams family on Red Mountain once again proved the versatility of their vineyards. The eclectic multi-vintage Fortuna III was voted the Best Red Blend of the judging. Their historic Chenin Blanc program went gold and the 2023 bottling ($19) goes down as one of the best bargains of the judging.
Mike Januik and his son Andrew entered what proved to be the Best Merlot under their Januik Winery brand in Woodinville.
Jim Dahlman continues to craft his wines in Woodinville, but he and his wife Andrea pour their Dahlman Cellars wines in the Stadium District of Andrea’s hometown of Tacoma. They can hang Cascadia International gold medals on three of them — a rosé, Tempranillo and a red blend.
Welcome Road Winery, which works closely with Sustainable WA grower Patrick Rawn in the Yakima Valley, can pour two gold medals at their tasting rooms in West Seattle and Bellingham — the 2021 Merlot and a Meritage-style 2021 Chaton.
In the Walla Walla Valley, Neher Family Wines, led by winemakers Roger Cockerline and Gordy Venneri, earned a double gold and best-of-class for its 2021 Petit Verdot. Brett Brockmeyer used grapes from historic Otis Vineyard in the Yakima Valley for the brilliant Albarino under his eponymous brand.
Capital Call Vintners, the young company operated by Iowa businessman Steve and Nikki Bruere with estate vineyards in the Columbia Gorge and the Walla Walla Valley, were rewarded with a double gold for the winemaking by Joshua Maloney on the 2021 Wheatfield Vines Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.
David Hess, a product of Washington State University’s viticulture and enology program, scored a double gold medal for his young Turtle Winery with a hedonistic red Meritage style off Red Mountain.
Jason Fox of Lagana Cellars focused on Walla Walla Valley fruit for his 2020 Cuvée that merited gold.
Yakima Valley Vintners, which represents the winemaking program at Yakima Valley College in Grandview, was at the head of the class for its 2020 Primitivo. The students, under the direction of program Trent Ball, also received gold medals for Chardonnay and Syrah.
King Estate leads Oregon producers
King Estate winemaker Brent Stone, who recently was promoted to share CEO duties with Ed King, returned five gold medals for the Biodynamic property west of Eugene.
In addition to the best rose, there were double gold medals for a 2021 Gruner Veltliner and a 2022 Pinot Noir. Stone’s Biodynamic Pinot Gris and the Cabernet Sauvignon under The Soldier brand received gold medals.
One of the Willamette Valley’s most respected winemakers — Isabelle Dutartre — crafted the best-of-class Malbec for Kerry Hill Winery that was grown by winery owner Mindy Mayer on her bee-friendly estate in Idaho’s Snake River Valley.
From Southern Oregon, Spangler Vineyards received best-of-class honors for its 2020 Cabernet Franc. Pat Spangler also earned a double gold for his 2021 Party of Six Claret and a gold for the 2020 Crater View Carménère. Stephen Reustle continued his golden tradition with Rojo Dulce – his fortified Tempranillo program. Rob Folin at majestic Belle Fiore in Ashland showed his flair with Sauvignon Blanc.
Gem State winemakers combine for 32 gold medals
The winemaking and grape growing talent in the Gem State consistently generated acclaim from the panel, which awarded a gold medal or better to 32 wines made in Idaho.
Snake River Valley vineyard managers helped to showcase the delicious versatility of their region. There were best-of-class awards by Idaho producers for six varieties, half of those for Burgundy varieties — Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris — Malbec (Bordeaux), Mourvèdre (Rhône) and Tempranillo (Spain).
In terms of double gold medals, they were awarded to Bitner Vineyards for its 2020 Old Vine Syrah, Dude DeWalt Cellars for a Cab made with Washington grapes, Famici Wine Co., for Vermentino, Hat Ranch for Petit Verdot, Huston Vineyards for Malbec, Parma Ridge for its 2020 Boys Blend Red Wine, and Veer for its 2022 Le Compère Red Wine.
Wetmore’s exploits extended well beyond his own brand. There were four gold medals for Hat Ranch Winery and a gold for sister label Vale Wine Co.
The Cascadia International also cast a spotlight once again on the vineyard site for Hat Ranch, established along the Sunnyslope by founding winemaker Tim Harless. The Hat Ranch vineyard has produced one of the Northwest’s top expressions of dry Muscat. And here comes Pinot Gris, a grape that’s rarely received attention in the Snake River Valley. The 2023 Pinot Gris that Wetmore made for Hat Ranch proved to be among the more fascinating wines of the Cascadia.
“We tore out the 1 1/2 acres of Muscat and planted three-quarters of an acre of Pinot Gris and the same amount of Grüner Veltliner,” Wetmore says. “The ‘23 was our first vintage, and it was really good. I wish we had more, but a third of that fruit goes to the USDA soil science program for its nematode research.”
Harvest for Harless and Wetmore was Sept. 19 at 21.9 Brix for 1.65 tons over the 3/4 acre.
“White wine is really hard to make,” Wetmore says. “You have to really be on top of it all the way to make good, crisp and aromatic whites that are clean. In ‘23, it was a little mellower of a harvest, so we had a little more time to do everything at the right time.”
Harless says, “The farming portion paid off, and we’ve had great acceptance in the tasting room. We’re happy with the outcome.”
The Tempranillo involves Hat Ranch for half of the blend, supported by Sawtooth, nearby Williamson and Rockspur.
James Nederend, his wife Sydney and their team at Koenig Vineyards accounted for nine gold medals between their two brands and one of their clients — the Bitner family. Sydney won gold medals for her SCORIA Vineyards project in the rosé and Cab categories.
Rolling Hills Vineyard, the 2023 Idaho Winery of the Year and a client of Walla Walla winemaker Tim Donahue, received a trio of gold medals. Among those was for a 2020 Petit Verdot, a red Bordeaux variety that continues to show promise in the Snake River Valley.
Famici Wine Co. — the Great Northwest Wine 2024 Idaho Winery to Watch — received a double gold medal for its Vermentino and a gold for its 2021 Vineyard Blend, a Meritage-style red.
In the Eagle Foothills town of Star, Dude DeWalt is pouring two gold-medals winners by Mike Prout as the graduate of the Walla Walla Community College esteemed wine program received praise for his 2022 Chardonnay and 2021 Cab. Clearwater Canyon Cellars in Lewiston turned Malbec from long-time Yakima Valley grower Dave Verhey into a gold.
Hester Creek brings back 4 golds to BC
Canadian winemakers used three varieties of cool-climate whites to win top awards at the Cascadia International — the Siegerrebe by Chaberton, the Ehrenfelser Icewine from Gehringer and the judging’s best Riesling by UpperBench Estate Winery on Penticton’s Naramata Bench.
The Gehringer family also scored a gold medal for a dry expression with Ehrenfelser and its popular Chardonnay-led Desert Sun blend. Chaberton also received a gold medal for its aromatic Bacchus.
Naramata Bench winemaker Kathy Malone earned a pair of double gold medals for Hillside Winery for her 2022 Muscat Ottonel and 2022 Pinot Gris, each from her Heritage Series tier. She also earned a gold medal for her 2021 Heritage Series Pinot Noir.
Hester Creek, across Road 8 from Gehringer Brothers, received four gold medals at the Cascadia. Great Northwest Wine’s 2023 British Columbia Winery of the Year, led by winemaker Mark Hopley, represented three vintages among his golds for Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and two red blends.
