Founder/owner David Dufenhorst established his Double D planting in 2013, and the site that’s a stone’s throw from the Columbia River upstream from Wenatchee continues to serve as a showcase for red Bordeaux varieties. The “heat dome” vintage of 2021 led to this delicious and straightforward blend of Malbec (51%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (49%) that spent nearly two years in a pleasing program of 35% new oak and underwent no fining or filtering prior to bottle. The nose of brownie mix, black cherry, mint leaf and black pepper carries onto the palate. Malbec’s juicy blue fruit notes provide brightness on the midpalate ahead of the finish reminiscent of a Toll House cookie. It’s a red that carries the Sustainable WA designation and has received praise and points for a growing list of critics — and now us.
