One of the more fascinating projects is the Pacific Northwest is led by the husband/wife team of Gavin and Shana Miller — an estate winery and creamery on the Naramata Bench in British Columbia. Gavin’s winemaking near Okanagan Lake led to the Best Riesling of the 2024 Cascadia International, a product of estate vines that benefited from the 2022 “Hail Mary” vintage – an extended harvest for Miller’s Riesling that ended on Halloween Eve. Evaluations begin with varietally correct aromas of lemon, kaffir lime and diesel. On the palate, its juicy acidity brings with it quick notes of sweet and sour citrus candy, backed by underlying hints of herbal and savory notes. Super refreshing with a lingering tangerine tang, an ideal pairing would be with a wedge of Shana’s King Cole blue cheese. Beyond that, the drop of residual sugar (0.7%) also lends this versatile expression of Riesling to patio enjoyment, seafood, grilled or cured meats. Considering the Upper Bench 2019 Riesling took best of show at the über-competitive British Columbia Lt. Governor Awards in 2020, Miller’s best-of-class triumph at the Cascadia was no surprise.
