Lopez Island Vineyards & Winery 2012 Madeleine Angevine, Puget Sound, $25

Last year, Brent Charnley’s 2012 Siegerrebe proved to be one of the top wines in Wine Press Northwest’s annual Platinum Judging, and his Madeleine Angevine from the same vintage could be in the same discussion — especially when paired with seafood. This white variety that excels in England has found a home in the Puget Sound, where Charnley farms it organically and Salmon Safe, then barrel ferments it in neutral oak. This example carries a huge nose of orange, rosewater, coconut, apple blossom, peach pit, beeswax and slate. It’s a mouth-filling with its complex offering of white peach, Asian pear and crisp apple, backed by a dry finish of lime zest and more peach pit. Serve with steamed mussels. Released in January, look for this at PCC Natural Markets, farmers markets in Western Washington, throughout San Juan County and at Charnley’s tasting room in Lopez Village.
