This hot-selling Bordeaux variety got the attention of Willamette Valley winemaker Ron Helbig, so he reached into Lonesome Springs Vineyard in Washington’s Yakima Valley for four barrel’s worth of fruit. Aromas feature Jolly Rancher grape candy, blackberry and black cherry with little influence of oak. The pour delivers a huge approach of blackberry, blueberry and pomegranate with medium tannins and lovely long finish of minerality. It’s one of the few wines that Helbig doesn’t guard with a Vino-Lok, using a screwcap instead.
