Terrence Atkins made Italian varieties a focus at his 60-acre vineyard near the eastern end of the Columbia Gorge near Goldendale, Wash., and his reserve lot of Barbera from six years ago is showing beautiful density starting with blackberry, purple plum and blueberry aromas. Richness spills out across the palate and with persistence, hinting at flavors of dark brambleberries, bittersweet chocolate and baking spices. This wine earned a silver medal at the 2014 Columbia Gorge Wine Competition. Those traveling along Highway 16 should check out his log cabin tasting room at Maryhill State Park on weekends through November and year-round in Kirkland.
