Thanks to Canada’s warmest growing region — the Black Sage Bench — one of British Columbia’s largest and oldest wineries was able to hang on until Oct. 22 before pulling in her Merlot at 24.7 Brix toward the end of this cool vintage in the Pacific Northwest. It first spent 1 1/2 in French oak then bottle aged for another 18 months, and the influence of Cabernet Franc (12%) heightens the aromas of plum, Van cherry, cranberry, cedar and sweet herbs. Its brimming with flavors of red currant and Montmorency cherry, backed by sweet red bell pepper and finished with a savory note of porcini mushroom. Suggested pairings include Bacon Carbonara, venison, hearty stews or homemade meatloaf, and many of the wines from this Golden Mile winery are available for shipping in the U.S.
