Zena Crown, an 80-acre site planted in 2004 just south of famed Bethel Heights Vineyard, provides an example of potential realized in the hands of Lynn Penner-Ash. She shined across the board with the 2012 vintage, and this lot of Dijon 777 clone influenced by the cooling coastal winds through Van Duzer Corridor is no exception. Flashy oak treatment shows with hints of caramel and mocha, backed by red cherry, red plum and raspberry with a pinch of mint and cedar. The drink brings more fruit and less oak, leading with boysenberry, cherry and rhubarb with orange oil in the finish. Mature tannins give it perfect body, making it a luxurious wine with the frame to age.
